About Emma Downey
Emma studied at Edinburgh College of Art, where she completed a BA (Hons.) in Design and Applied Arts. After graduation she worked for several years initially as a costume assistant and maker, then as a designer for productions in her native Dublin, Ireland. She has worked with theatre, music theatre, opera and dance companies including Junk Ensemble, Brokentalkers, Nightstar Dance Companies, eX Ensemble, The Paperdolls, Smashing Times and Dublin Youth Theatre. She has also been involved in advertising and film, and has created costumes for museum exhibition programmes. Emma also has a strong affinity with set design and has learned much about the discipline while assisting established set designers. In 2014 she relocated to Vienna (Austria) and continues her costume design work there.
During her education and years in the industry Emma has learned many skills which include design, characterization, pattern drafting, tailoring, fabric dying, embroidery, millinery, garment aging and distressing, has comprehensive knowledge of period costume styles and period costume construction, and costume for dance and movement, as well as having garnered excellent collaboration and communication skills necessary to work in this field.
